The client, a commercial photography partnership based in the city of Preston, purchased a single-storey warehouse on a rundown inner city industrial estate.

The first phase was to convert the interior of the existing warehouse into individual studio areas, stores and workspace.

For the second phase of the project a Preston-based architect’s practice was commissioned to change the external appearance of the building and provide additional office spaces.

The second phase involved re-cladding the exterior of the existing warehouse and designing a new build extension to create a new entrance, art studio, reception and office space with Hamilton Construction acting as the main contractor.

The building is designed on two open plan internal levels, ground and mezzanine floors, on an exposed steel frame off piled foundations, with grey double-glazed curtain walling and a roof of silver profiled steel sheeting. The external areas and car parks were completed with both hard and soft landscaping.

The client’s main requirement was that visually the new extension would reflect the quality and creativity of their business in the North West.

The success of this project was recognised when awarded a Certificate of Merit by Preston and South Ribble Civic Trust, rewarding the contributions of special value to the conservation and improvement of the local environment.
